The Forty Rules of Love

I just finished reading The Forty rules of Love by Elif Shafak. I’m quite interested in Sufism and Rumi poems which naturally drew me towards this book.

This is a spiritual journey that makes us pause and think for a while, answers the questions that we had about life and love, also gives a hope when life is not as planned.

I have always believed Rumi’s words “As you start to walk on the way, the way appears”.

It is a great pleasure to read about Rumi’s transformation journey through love.

“Every true love and friendship is a story of unexpected transformation. If we are the same person before and after we loved, that means we haven’t loved enough.”

One moment when I couldn’t hold back my tears.

A man came to Shams, eager to become his disciple. Shams agreed, but only on one condition: he must do whatever Shams asked. When Shams sent him to buy wine from the tavern, the man hesitated, questioning how a good Muslim could enter such a place. He could not keep his promise, and Shams could not accept him.

Later in his life, Shams conducted the same trial with Rumi. Rumi paused only for a moment. He had never entered a tavern, never tasted wine—but he trusted Shams completely, trusting the love between them. He nodded and left without question.

The instant Rumi was gone, Shams fell to his knees, overwhelmed with ecstasy. Clutching the rosary Rumi had forgotten, Shams thanked God for a companion who believed without doubt, and prayed that Rumi’s soul would forever remain intoxicated with Divine Love.

The story celebrates the rare connection with a true companion: someone full of trust, love, and courage, bringing the profound joy of having a companion who believes in you wholeheartedly.

Trust the process✨
